Background of the Study
Semantic analysis in literature involves interpreting meanings, themes, and cultural nuances embedded in texts. For Efik literature, which reflects rich cultural narratives and traditional wisdom, computational approaches offer new methodologies to systematically analyze large bodies of text. Techniques such as word embeddings, topic modeling, and sentiment analysis have been applied to explore semantic structures within Efik literary works (Edet, 2023). These approaches help uncover patterns in language use, narrative motifs, and emotional undertones that are often overlooked in manual analysis. The integration of natural language processing and machine learning has enabled scholars to process vast digital corpora of Efik literature, facilitating deeper insights into historical and contemporary contexts (Ibekwe, 2024). However, Efik’s unique idiomatic expressions and stylistic variations present challenges that necessitate tailored computational models. Recent advancements in semantic analysis have shown promise in adapting algorithms to capture the subtleties of culturally rich texts (Ndukwe, 2025). This study examines current computational methods applied to Efik literature, evaluating their effectiveness in extracting semantic meaning and proposing enhancements that incorporate linguistic and cultural specificities.

Statement of the Problem
Despite progress in computational semantic analysis, existing approaches often fall short when applied to Efik literature due to the language’s complex cultural idioms and stylistic diversity (Edet, 2023; Ibekwe, 2024). Many models struggle to accurately capture the nuanced meanings and contextual subtleties inherent in Efik texts, leading to partial or misleading interpretations. This limitation hampers efforts to fully appreciate and document the literary heritage of the Efik people. Furthermore, the scarcity of annotated Efik corpora for training semantic models exacerbates these challenges. A comprehensive evaluation of current computational methods is necessary to identify deficiencies and develop strategies that enhance the semantic analysis of Efik literature, ensuring that cultural and linguistic richness is faithfully represented.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of current computational approaches to semantic analysis in Efik literature.
  2. To identify challenges in capturing the cultural and linguistic nuances of Efik texts.
  3. To propose methodological improvements for more accurate semantic interpretation.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are current semantic analysis methods when applied to Efik literature?
  2. What linguistic and cultural challenges impede accurate semantic interpretation?
  3. How can computational models be refined to better capture the nuances of Efik literary texts?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it advances the application of computational semantic analysis to Efik literature, a vital repository of cultural heritage. By addressing challenges in interpreting idiomatic and stylistic nuances, the research will provide more accurate analytical tools for literary scholars and cultural historians. The findings will support the preservation and appreciation of Efik literary traditions and inform the development of culturally sensitive computational models, benefiting linguists, digital humanities researchers, and cultural preservationists.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses exclusively on computational approaches to semantic analysis in Efik literature. It does not extend to other genres or languages and is limited to digital texts available for analysis.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Semantic Analysis: The process of deriving meaning from text data through computational methods.
  2. Efik Literature: Written works in the Efik language, reflecting cultural narratives and traditions.
  3. Word Embeddings: A computational representation of words in vector space capturing semantic relationships.
